Landscapes
WHERE TO NOW?
60cm x 60cm
Oil on MDF
The Jurassic coast in Dorset is a challenge to paint because every view, wherever you look, is a painting. I was enchanted by a view of the sea with Jacobs Ladders shining through the clouds. The path I was walking on seemed to be taking me straight into them.
STANDING STONES AT AVEBURY
45cm x 65cm
Acrylic on board
The Avebury Stone Circle needs little introduction - a magical place where history and myth come together to create a vast sacred landscape from the Neolithic Age.
THE HILLS ARE ALIVE
60cm x 50cm
Oil on paper
Walking across Dartmoor in the early morning, I looked across the hills and saw a magnificent tree that was covered in frost and shone almost blue in the light. Every surface was alive with glittering light.
WILD WOOD PATH
40cm x 30cm
Oil on MDF
The forest I walk in regularly always fascinates with its paths and thick foliage. The sunlight and shadows make it appear a different place every time I visit. This painting is the height of summer when the trees and undergrowth are especially lush.
THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD…
TO ULLSWATER
40cm x 30cm
Oil on MDF
As a keen walker there are always wonderful vistas to paint in the Lake District. Ullswater is one of the less visited of all the lovely lakes where the surrounding countryside seems to beautifully complement the Lake itself.
DARTMOOR STORM
43cm x 53cm
Oil on board
The open spaces of the moors are an exciting source of inspiration for a landscape painter. And when the weather is wild - as it often is - the landscape seems to come alive…just as this tree seemed to in the strong winds that blew from the west. Painted from a photograph, the branches were waving so fast they blurred. The painting comes ready framed.
TREE, MOUNTAIN AND STONES
70cm x 90cm
Acrylic on box canvas
Trees without leaves have a wonderful sculptural quality - more like a waving person than a leafless tree.
AUTUMN LEAVES
65cm x 40cm
Acrylic on box canvas
Autumn is just a gift to an artist - everywhere is filled with colourful trees and often unusual coloured leaves as the tree gets ready for the Winter.
Then it all goes quiet and Spring arrives with even more wonderful trees to paint.
THROUGH THE WOODS
00cm x 00cm
Acrylic on canvas board
Woods offer such opportunities to a painter - not just the trees but the light and shadows, the paths. In this painting I have tried to give a feel of the wood rather than faithfully painting every tree.
HIGH SUMMER
70cm x 50cm
Acrylic on box canvas
Summer in the hills is not always green - a field of plum trees in the middle of other fields was quite blue and stood out beautifully against the surrounding ones - yellow with wheat and corn crops.
BEACH HUTS
42cm x 50cm
Acrylic on canvas paper
Not the usual neat row of beach huts, but just three rather tumble down huts which had their own charm. And a beach that was also a bit scrappy - but a wonderful combination to paint.
